A high performance 3.5l V6 is just the beginning
The Lexus Hybrid Drive begins with a high performance, all-alloy V6 with direct and port injection producing an impressive 218 kW. Dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) optimises the inlet and exhaust valve timing for increased efficiency, while quad cams operate roller rockers to further maximise output.
The power of two electric motors
Adding to the V6 power are two high output electric motors. The first one acts as a starter for the V6 engine and also as a power generator, while the second motor drives the rear wheels. The 147 kW they produce supplements the petrol engine, for a total system output of 254 kW.
Electronically Controlled Continuously Variable Transmission
Feel the seamless acceleration and quiet running as your speed builds continuously without gear changes. This advanced transmission also ensures the petrol engine and the electric motors work as one; it even contributes to fuel economy and low emissions.
Braking energy is harnessed by Regenerative Braking
When you slow down or apply the brakes, a system known as Regenerative Braking captures the kinetic energy which is normally wasted. This energy is then converted into electrical energy which charges the battery.
A long life battery
Power for the electric motors is supplied by a 'Nickel Metal Hydride Battery' an advanced battery engineered to last many times longer than a conventional car battery. It is charged not only by the Regenerative Braking but by the generator. Placement of the battery over the rear axle helps ensure a near ideal 50/50 weight distribution.
Fingertip control with Electric Power Steering
For improved steering efficiency when parking, plus greater road feel at high speeds, the GS 450h is equipped with Electric Power Steering. This system dispenses with hydraulic hoses and pumps and when driving on straight roads conserves energy, improving fuel economy. In addition, Variable Gear Ratio Steering (VGRS) helps produce excellent handling and drivability by adjusting
the steering response according to vehicle speed.
Comfort and control with Adaptive Variable Suspension
For a more stimulating drive, you can fine-tune suspension damping settings to 'Normal Mode' for everyday driving situations, or to 'Sport' for superior handling and stability, whilst maintaining superb ride comfort. All at the touch of a button.
