The RX 450h represents a world first with the introduction of an Atkinson Cycle V6 engine in a hybrid, delivering a ride that optimises economy without sacrificing performance. Combining the Atkinson, or high expansion, Cycle with a 3.5 litre dual VVT-i V6 engine, Lexus continues to lead the field in hybrid technology.
The intelligent Lexus Hybrid Drive system
The Lexus RX 450h combines a sophisticated purpose-developed Atkinson Cycle 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine with a 123kW electric drive front motor, which effortlessly work together for a thrilling yet environmentally sensitive driving experience. When you press the start button and push the brake, the electric power is silently activated. As you accelerate, the power source switches seamlessly to the petrol engine when extra power is required. A second 50kW AC permanent magnet motor powers the rear wheels during take-off and acceleration. The RX 450h has the ability to travel up to two kilometres at low speeds on electric power alone*.

The ease of Electric Power Steering
When you're driving straight ahead, no steering assistance is provided which reduces fuel consumption because, unlike conventional systems, Electric Power Steering only provides assistance when you turn. Being speed-sensitive, it also ensures maximum assistance while parking as well as greater road feel at higher speeds.
Electronically controlled braking
Equipped with an electro-hydraulic braking system, the RX450h delivers greater brake-force distribution because the hydraulic pressure of the brakes on each wheel is controlled independently and progressively. This means the reassurance of outstanding vehicle control whether you’re driving in city traffic or tackling tougher off-road terrain.
Regenerative braking
When slowing down or braking, energy is lost in a normal vehicle – largely through the brakes creating heat. The Lexus Hybrid Drive system allows for energy-saving regenerative braking on both the front and rear axles. Regenerative braking captures the vehicle's 'kinetic' energy and converts it into electrical energy, which is then stored in the hybrid battery. This electricity is later put to good use by the electric drive motors to propel the vehicle.
