LEXUS REVEALS WORLD's FIRST LUXURY HYBRID

Lexus has previewed the world's first petrol-electric hybrid luxury SUV.

The Lexus RX400h was unveiled at Detroit's recent North American International Auto Show and will go on sale in the United States late this year.

It will be powered by a V6 Hybrid Synergy Drive system that combines sub-eight second 0-100km/h acceleration with fuel-efficiency equivalent to the current average for a four-cylinder compact sedan.

The Lexus RX400h will also be rated in the U.S. as a Super Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (SULEV), one of the most stringent emissions ratings in the industry.

The RX400h is based on the popular Lexus RX330 SUV, but employs a full hybrid system which allows it to operate in either petrol or electric modes, as well as a mode that combines power from both.

"The Lexus RX400h is a breakthrough in hybrid petrol-electric powertrains, as it ramps up performance with the traditional hybrid advantages of high mileage and low emissions," said John Roca, Senior Manager, Lexus Australia.

RX400h will increase low to mid-speed acceleration and develop a peak of 201kW, combining a powerful electric motor combined with the 3.3-litre V6 used in the popular RX330.

The US version will offer optional all-wheel-drive and optimise acceleration with assistance from a rear-drive electric motor.

RX400h's regenerative braking system uses the electric motor as a generator.

During braking or coasting the Lexus hybrid system captures kinetic energy normally lost as heat through the brakes, and converts it into electricity to recharge the batteries.

RX400h will also employ Vehicle Dynamic Management (VDM), a new system which uses sensors and intelligent throttle and brake control for a less obtrusive, yet more effective result than conventional Vehicle Stability Cntrol (VSC).

The RX400h is an evolution of the highly successful Lexus RX330, which currently leads the Australian luxury SUV market sector.

RX330 also won Australia's Best Luxury Four-Wheel Drive and was nominated for Wheels Car of The Year.

Australian plans for the RX400h have not yet been released.
