LEXUS SCORES AUSTRALIAN MOTOR SHOW COUP

Lexus has scored a coup by securing for display at this October's Australian International Motor Show in Sydney a concept vehicle that could provide the basis of its next generation SUV.

The Lexus LF-X incorporates advanced drive-by-wire technology and is the first off-road vehicle to be designed with an aircraft-like yoke steering wheel which turns through only 45 degrees.

The degree of sensitivity it brings through sophisticated electronic steering management dramatically improves driver control over that possible with conventional steering systems.

LF-X also has no conventional gearshift. A centre console-mounted control knob allows gears to be selected either intuitively according to need, or manually when required.

The vehicle was shown for the first time at the Tokyo Motor Show just 10 months ago.

It is one of three leading edge designs released so far under a new Lexus design philosophy - intended to take the marque to a position of styling leadership.

The LF-S also revealed in Tokyo, has already been translated into the new GS300 sports sedan due for release next year. The LF-C concept was revealed in New York earlier this year.

The LF-X concept vehicle is currently powered by the fuel efficient and ecologically sound 4.3 litre V8 Quad Cam engine also fitted to the production LS430 luxury limousine.

However it has the potential for transformation into a petrol/electric hybrid or a hydrogen hybrid in production configuration.

"The LF-X gives many hints to future production capability," John Roca, senior manager," Lexus Australia said.

"It has developed an elegant method of third row seating stowage which revolutionises internal packaging," he said.

"Advanced by-wire driver controls are a challenge especially for off-road application.

"LF-X points to their potential introduction in the foreseeable future."

The Australian International Motor Show opens at Sydney's Darling Harbour on October 7.
