LEXUS REVEALS WORLD FIRST HYBRID LUXURY SEDAN

Lexus has revealed the world's first petrol/electric hybrid luxury sedan.

The GS450h, which is based on the just released GS300 and GS430, will be powered by an all-new hybrid powertrain, matching a 3.5-litre V6 engine with an electric motor.

When produced, the hybrid Lexus GS450h will provide a level of acceleration performance comparable to its V8-powered GS430 sibling, with fuel efficiency similar to a 2-litre four cylinder compact sedan.

It will accelerate from 0-100km/h in around six seconds, with the powerful electric motor delivering high levels of torque during mid-acceleration, for impressive overtaking prowess.

The GS450h will also feature one of the industry's lowest emissions ratings.

In a market sector that is highly receptive to performance and technology, the Lexus GS hybrid stands out from its competitors by blending high performance and luxury with environmental efficiency.

The world's first luxury hybrid SUV - the Lexus RX400h - will go on sale in the US and the UK within the next month. Its Australian availability has not yet been determined.

The RX400h is based on the popular RX330, and will be powered by a 3.3-litre V6 matched with electric motors. The luxury hybrid SUV will accelerate from 0-100km/h in around 7.5 seconds.

Scott Grant, divisional manager, Lexus Australia, commented on the technology innovation.

"Lexus is consistently proving itself as a technology leader. We've traditionally challenged the luxury market, and our unfolding hybrid technology development continues that innovation," he said.

"As well as creating the Lexus luxury hybrid SUV, we've revealed the world's first high performance, low emission, fuel efficient, luxury sports sedan."

Both hybrid models will continue the Lexus tradition of luxury appointments, user-friendly technology, build quality and ride comfort.

While the GS450h is set for sale overseas in 2006, its Australian availability has not yet been determined.
