The RX 450h employs Lexus Hybrid Drive technology to deliver breathtaking power.

Lexus Hybrid Drive tool tip: Hybrid is about the conservation of energy. The Lexus Hybrid Drive System not only delivers performance, it saves energy at every stage. For example, any energy from the petrol engine that is not required to propel the vehicle is converted to electricity and stored for later use. Kinetic energy that would otherwise be wasted as heat energy through the brakes when slowing the vehicle is converted to electrical energy through regenerative braking and stored. That stored energy is used, via the electric drive motor, to accelerate the vehicle. As part of the Lexus system's energy saving strategy, there is near zero wastage (or slippage) in the transmission. While the transmission acts as an E-CVT and drives exactly as you would a sequential-shift automatic transmission, it conserves energy by reducing any slippage - it provides direct mechanical drive. There is no torque converter and there are no rubber belts.

    Tip
    This engine uses a high-expansion ratio Atkinson cycle, VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing-intelligent) system, ETCS-i (Electronic Throttle Control System-intelligent), and EGR system employing a highly efficient EGR cooler. In addition, use of an engine water pump assembly has eliminated the V-ribbed belt. Thus, improved engine performance, quietness, fuel economy, and cleaner emissions have been achieved.

  • Electronic Continuously Variable Transmission (E-CVT)
    Tip
    The Electronically controlled Continuously Variable Transmission (E-CVT) seamlessly combines the driving force of the V8 petrol engine and the electric drive motor. It allows the vehicle to accelerate without gear changes, so speed increases remarkably quietly and seamlessly. It has a sequential-shift feature, so you can select a degree of engine braking for corner entry and hill descents. It also allows you to experience a sequential shift feeling when accelerating or decelerating.
  • Electronic Four Wheel Drive (E-Four) saves fuel by only using All Wheel Drive when it is needed.
