All-new Lexus ES surges forward into a new generation of luxury sedan
The arrival of the all-new Lexus ES represents a generational shift for the luxury lifestyle brand in Australia, as the essence of the luxury sedan is reimagined through striking exterior design, innovative comfort and convenience features and the next chapter of Lexus battery-electric powertrain technology.
The all-new ES has been developed under the Lexus design concept of ‘Clean Tech x Elegance’, which pairs refinement with a simple and clean aesthetic. A larger car in every dimension, the new ES presents a dramatic form with a sleek, flowing silhouette, commanding stance and dynamic, contoured surfaces.
As it moves into its eighth generation, the ES will be available with a battery-electric (BEV) powertrain for the first time in the model’s history, which will spearhead the local introduction of the new luxury sedan range in Australia before being joined by a petrol-electric hybrid drivetrain option later in the year.
Lexus Australia Chief Executive Jack Hobbs said the arrival of the all-new ES sedan marked a new chapter for the luxury lifestyle brand.
“The all-new Lexus ES reimagines the luxury sedan segment, building on its long-established reputation for luxury and refinement while increasing customer choice in electrified powertrains,” Mr Hobbs said.
“Joining the acclaimed petrol-electric hybrid, a new BEV powertrain sees the latest ES debut a host of new-generation features and technological advancements, while elevating the premium materials, quality and luxury feel that are fundamental to the Lexus brand.”
The all-new ES is built on an evolution of the global architecture K-platform (GA-K), redesigned to accommodate the latest electrified powertrains. The design team applied the “golden ratio” principle to achieve an ideal relationship between the key dimensions (wheelbase, length, width and height) to create a sedan that is both elegant and visually striking, and which offers SUV-like interior space.
The ES establishes a new-generation exterior design while also incorporating an evolution of the distinctive spindle-shaped front face that now extends from the front bumper into the bonnet.
Inside, the ES has been completely redesigned to offer customers a sophisticated, technology-rich environment filled with high-quality materials, thoughtful features and signature Lexus Takumi craftsmanship.
The interior has been crafted with a clean and simple design which minimises the driver’s eye movement and allows all key functions to fall easily to hand, taking the Lexus Tazuna principles of simple and intuitive usability to the next level.
The cabin features world-first responsive hidden switches on the dashboard and steering wheel which react to hover and touch, transitioning between visible and absent. While having the smooth look of a touch-panel, the switches give satisfying tactile feedback when used, combining practicality with a new aesthetic.
A new steering wheel design greets the driver, featuring an embossed ‘LEXUS’ wordmark in place of the ‘L’ logo used previously, while a new-generation Lexus front seat debuts a split construction that contributes to the slim profile and excellent comfort.
Further innovations include bamboo layering ornamentation which uses precise printing technology to overlay strips of bamboo with surface-emitting lights, serving the dual purpose of creating textural woodgrain patterns during the day and at night, via illumination.
The digital cockpit on all ES models is equipped with a new 12.3-inch multi-information display with full-screen map view and wireless smartphone integration ahead of the driver. A centrally mounted full-HD 14.0-inch touchscreen provides the interface for the latest-generation multimedia system, enabling intuitive, effortless interactions between driver and vehicle.
The more powerful Arene operating system delivers faster performance and the ability to handle more complex tasks, and features embedded voice command, navigation and drive recorder, plus an enhanced screen layout with customisable widgets.
Another new development evident in the cabin is the shift-by-wire Electro-Shiftmatic toggle shift lever which has been ergonomically shaped for ease of use and features single-motion operation frontward and rearward, in conjunction with a ‘Park’ button, for a more compact design.
The all-new ES benefits from the latest fourth-generation Lexus Safety System+ (LSS+) which includes multiple new additions to the active safety and convenience suite, along with enhancements to 15 of the existing driver support functions from the previous generation system.
Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) now includes a new Eco Run Mode that can provide more gentle acceleration and display the air drag reduction effect when tracking preceding vehicles, as well as a Map-connected Drive feature that adds acceleration/deceleration functions to provide vehicle speeds appropriate for a variety of intersections, in addition to the existing support for preceding vehicles and curves.1
A new high-definition type Adaptive High-beam System (AHS) completes the list of new functions – it provides more precise illumination, adds vertical direction shading and dims the light shining on pedestrians as well.1
The newly developed multi-pathway platform that underpins the all-new ES is a first not only for the ES, but also the Lexus brand, as it supports both internal combustion – via hybrid-electric (HEV) – and all-electric (BEV) powertrains.
With the choice of front-wheel drive or dual-motor all-wheel drive, the first ES BEV has been engineered to maximise driving performance and range, while minimising power loss and weight.
The front-drive ES 350e produces 165kW from its single front electric motor, while the dual-motor ES 500e AWD is the most powerful ES to date with a combined system output of 252kW.
The 74.7kWh lithium-ion battery underpinning the ES BEV supports 22kW three-phase AC charging and 150kW CCS2 DC charging, helping to top up the battery from 10 to 20 per cent in as little as 28 minutes.2
A newly developed sixth-generation Lexus series-parallel hybrid powertrain is fitted to HEV versions of the new ES sedan, which provides a high-level balance between performance, fuel efficiency and quietness.
It combines a highly efficient 2.5-litre inline four-cylinder engine, new eAxle with the Power Control Unit integrated into the transaxle, and a lithium-ion battery for a combined system output of 144kW.
Since its arrival in Australia in 1992, just two years after the iconic Lexus LS 400, the Lexus ES has been renowned for its exceptional ride comfort, quietness and smooth operation – traits which have been taken to an even higher level on the new-generation ES.
Upgrades to structural rigidity minimise vibrations and contribute to sharp, intuitive steering and smooth acceleration and braking response, while the fully redeveloped suspension enhances the transmission of power to the road and heightens the smoothness of the ride.
A fresh model line-up has been introduced for the eighth-generation ES luxury sedan.
At launch there will be two BEV models available – the ES 350e FWD and ES 500e AWD – both specified in flagship Sports Luxury equipment level.
When the hybrid ES 300h FWD joins the ES range later in the year, it will be available in Luxury specification with an optional Enhancement Pack (EP).
The ES 300h Luxury features luxurious specification including 19-inch alloy wheels, LED lighting, NuLux®3 upholstery, panoramic roof, dual-zone climate control, heated front seats with eight-way adjustment, smart entry and start, 10-speaker audio system and a full suite of active safety features.
The ES 300h Luxury + EP brings additional premium features including ventilated front seats, multi-colour ambient interior illumination, head-up display, a wireless smartphone charger4, panoramic view monitor and a 17-speaker Mark Levinson®3 premium audio system.
Choosing the battery-electric ES 350e Sports Luxury adds further luxurious specification such as 21-inch alloy wheels, LED front lights with high-definition Adaptive High-beam System, easy-close doors, semi-aniline leather accented seats with 10-way driver’s seat adjustment and four-way front lumbar support, driver and front passenger radiant heater, two wireless smartphone chargers4, rear door sunshades and Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) with pitch and bounce control.
The ES 500e Sports Luxury differs from the ES 350e with the Interactive Manual Drive feature, unique 21-inch alloy wheels and AWD badging.
Seven stylish exterior paint colours will be offered on the ES, led by the newly developed Wavelength, which presents as a solid-looking colour yet features a blue-effect that appears in the highlights.
The colour palette also includes Sonic Copper, Sonic Titanium, White Nova, Sonic Iridium, Sonic Chrome and Graphite Black, while three interior trim colours – White, Black and Hazel – can be optioned on all grades.5
Lexus Connected Services6 provides every new ES owner with an expanded range of valuable benefits, paired with the Lexus Connected smartphone app.
